The African Safari Pith Helmet that you see here is the newest pith helmet in our line. Like most of the others (Indian, French, British, Square-crowned, Camo) it is a real pith helmet. By "real" we mean that the hat is made from the core (pith) of trees that grow in northern Vietnam. They are made one piece at a time--see the images at our Pith Helmets main page. This helmet has the same properties as the others, that being light weight (the 4-ply wood interior is low-density-somewhat like balsa wood), immersible in water whereby the wearer stays cool as he/she hikes and the water evaporates, genuine leather sweatband and chin strap. Perhaps you have been following the controversy over the issuing of black berets to the entire U.S. Army. This is the beret. The elite Rangers were once the only U.S. soldiers who could wear black berets. Understandably many of these fine soldiers and heroes in various conflicts around the world are not happy about the replacement of ball cap-style field caps and other headgear with black berets. Others, like Army Chief of Staff General Eric Shinseki who ordered the change, feel that the berets look very professional and raise morale. This 100% wool beret is made by Parkhurst; it is the same beret that has been issued to the Army (see image insert of Parkhurst factory). | These hats go by various names on this side of the Pacific Ocean. Some call them Coolie Hats (but we think this is pejorative), others call them Chinese Fisherman Hats (but we think this is too narrow and limiting). The fact is that this very functional hat is worn by both men and women in many different Asian countries. This particular example comes from Vietnam. When we were there buying our pith helmets (we are also PITHHELMETS.COM), we observed this light and simple hat being worn for both sun and rain protection. This simply is very good headgear.
